KiloWatts - Charting His Own Course

by Doug Vaccaro

Recently completing his 4th album, "Routes", among numerous singles and remixes, James Watts continues to create dynamic and unpredictable moods with his music. Currently living in Philadelphia, he's played at events such as the Gaian Mind monthly and the long-running Hologram. He is a resident at the annual electronic festival Lab30 in Germany, and performed at 2005's Geologic Festival, held in Illinois by Psymbolic & Chilluminati. He has released music on Distinct'ive Breaks, Mixmag Live, Diffusion Records and Artificial Music Machine among others. He's generally known for his complex rhythmic audio editing, sliced and diced to all hell, married to wistful melodic structure and vaporous soundscapes.

Hi Jamie! How are you?
Pretty good. Summer's almost over, gettin' ready for the leaves to fall and trying not to think about the mind numbing cold of Philadelphia's winter.

I hear that. Factor in those Eagles fans and you're in for a brutal winter! Just messin'... So tell me about your unique style in the production world.
My tastes change regularly, but I tend to focus on bridging the gap between my shifting around by expanding on previous elements I've used, into the new stuff I'm inspired by. Whatever has built up as a "unique style" is just a combination of all the different music that has moved me.

I know I can always count on something fresh when I see your name. Not afraid to take a chance and try something new. Props to you my friend!
I'd get tired of doing the same ol' shit day after day, for sure.

When did you decide that this was going to be the route you were going to take in life?
I figured this was my only option, considering I'm not any good at doing anything else. I've tried it all, and I'm heavily interested in a lot of different things, but this is what I've been doing my whole life, and it seems to have reigned supreme over the rest.

So things have been good for you thus far. Any complaints?
Not a one.

You lead a charmed life then. Where do you find your inspiration to create music?
I usually have the greatest ideas right before I'm falling asleep - but unfortunately, there's no way in hell I'm gonna get back out of bed and write it down. So most of the time I just sit in front of the box and wade through the bullshit until something brilliant comes along. Then I try to forget it ever happened.

Beyond that, though, there are people out there who are busting their asses making incredible music every day, and that tends to kick me into high gear. Especially the people I know who have stuck with it for so long. There will always be an underlying question of "what's the point of all this," but it's good to know that the people I admire are still chugging away and asking Themselves the same question.

Which artists are doing it for you right now?
The Village Orchestra – part of The Marcia Blaine School for Girls (who equally rock), album called “Et In Arcadia Ego” – beautiful stuff. Tipper’s new one is going to blow the lid off. Bil Bless continues to rock it as The Disciple Grin. And Helios once again brings the vaporous vibes with “Eingya”.

Yeah, Bless deff knows how to bring it. Your new album "Routes" on the Artificial Music Machine imprint has just hit the shops. How has the feedback been so far?
Really good. People have sent alot of great words, so that's cool that people are diggin it.

What can we expect when purchasing the CD?
Expect some brilliant digital art by Blackmoth. Always something new to be seen there. This particular piece contains digitally sliced and diced images of Philly, DC, NYC, Austin, Dallas, Baltimore, and other visited places from the past year. Find them all, win a biscuit.

The album in a word is beautiful. I love the soundscapes and lush beats. This is some of the best after hour music that I have ever heard. The production is top of the line and I really think this album will be with me till the end of time.

That's great to hear, thank you.

So where can people look to find your stuff? Any special shops holding this that you’d like to mention?
The CDs are available directly through the Artificial Music Machine website. For mp3s & FLACs (and CDs), support the good people at the Psymbolic Shop or the TBTMO. Both carry a wide selection of CDs and music, and are also very good friends. Psymbolic also makes some killer necklaces.

So what does the future hold for KiloWatts? Any more releases we should keep an eye out for?
Remix album – “Problems/Solved” available as mp3 very soon. Packed full of great remixes by various artists of the tracks from “Problem/Solving.”

Skeetaz is next on the horizon – a collab between Bil Bless [SOTEG / The Disciple Grin] and myself.

Shit, that's gonna blow peoples minds! Thanks for your time Jamie! Wishing you the best of luck on everything!
