Jumpin' and Pumpin' with the Plump DJs Matt Young makes nice with the buxom boys Following on from my recent Soul of Man interview, we thought we’d keep things on a Finger Lickin’ vibe by talking to Andy Gardner and Lee Rous. You might know them better as the Plump DJs. The Plump DJs are a global phenomenon. Their London night Passenger was instrumental in developing breakbeat into the sound we hear today, as well as giving it a massive boost into the general club land consciousness of the time. The Plumps’ own productions have also been groundbreaking. You can hear them played everywhere from Funky House to UK Garage nights, being caned by DJ’s from Erick Morillo to Rob Tissera. Their Hot Mix for Radio One’s Essential Selection is the most downloaded segment in the shows history, and their regular Eargasm nights at Fabric continue to break the London superclubs attendance records. But of course, you know all that. You want to know the more interesting questions, like who they tip for the top, and just why they don’t play in America… ![]() Why breaks? Why not? What influences, other than musical ones, do you have on your productions and DJing? Good food and drink play an essential part. Where do you consider the breakbeat scene to be going in terms of market penetration - that is to say, will breakbeat ever be as universally as trance or house? No, but breakbeat has a very healthy growing scene. You're well known for your love of old synths - what's your favourite piece of studio equipment? Too many faves really. Possibly our "Devilfish" which is a modified 303. Who do you consider to be the 'new' Plump DJ's in terms of producers or DJs we should look out for? Don't think we'll be replaced just yet. Up and coming acts like the Breakfastaz, Rogue Element and Ozzie guy Dopamine are doing great things at the moment. We all know that you got your names from a top shelf magazine. What is your favourite top shelf magazine? Plumpers obviously! No seriously Club magazine is always good for a laugh. What's been your favourite night/club to play at? Probably Womb in Tokyo. Fantastic club. Fantastic sound system. Fantastic crowd! Why haven't you played stateside, and when can we expect to see you back on the other side of the Atlantic? We've had lots of complications with obtaining visas - the US is very strict. We are just talking about a few Canada dates next year, and then the USA the following year with a bit of luck. ![]() What's your favourite Plump production and why? You are only as good as your last creation, so it has to be the track we have just finished. We've recently had POD & Bowser 'The Anti'/'Get Loose' and Lee Coombes & Andy Gardner 'Obsessional Rhythm.' Are there plans to do any further solo work? Not yet, we are totally concentrating on the next Plump album, and if that does well there will be no reason to do any solo work for a while. If you didn't produce breaks, what sort of music would you most likely make and why? Probably one extreme or the other - either really underground techno or hip hop. What's the most embarassing thing that's ever happened to you whilst DJing and why? Lee once knocked the needle flying right at the peak of 'Scram.' That was pretty funny. What could we currently find in your record bag? Records, CDs, dirty socks, and loads of old boarding cards. Technics or Vestax? Technics. CDs or Vinyl? Vinyl, but CDs are great when you are travelling light. Kylie or Dannii? Danni - less face lifts. What can we expect from the Plump DJs in the near future? Expect a new album with a slightly new sound... Expect the unexpected! :: November 2005 :: Additional information on the Plump Djs can be found at www.plumpdjs.co.uk |
