Spin Out Records Artists Born Tricky, Digital Filth & Hyper

by Stu Fingerhut

Born Tricky, aka Jeremy Duffy, hails from North London. With an extremely eclectic attitude towards music in general, it helps BT produce a very wide spectrum of audio phatness! At just 18 years old BT secured his debut release with Dance label "Spin Out Records", home to some of the finest boys in breaks!. His track "Let Me Out" is out in July, with remixes from 'DJ Hyper' and remix competition winner, in assosciation with IDJ magazine and Beatport.com, 'Digital Filth'. Born Tricky is set to explode onto the dance scene in the next few years, so watch out!

Digital Filth, aka Paul Carroll, has been producing electronic music for 6 years and has been DJ'ing for 8. Filth formally known as Lucas won numerous DJ competitions over the years, the main one being Mixitmoto, a national Competition that had competitors from England, Scotland, Wales and ireland. Winning this competition led him to have a cameo role part in the second Human Traffic film, which was called 'It's all gone Pete Tong' as well as a tour accross Germany, europe, Ibiza and all over the U.K. Not to long after the Mixitmoto, a DJ who saw him playing out, called 'The Freelance Hellraiser' nominated Filth to be apart of a T.V. show called the Joy of Decks. Paul has now been concentrating fulltime on producing sounds and songs, that he could use in his DJ sets. His music is quite varied ranging from Techno to downtempo but always with an electronic feel. The music of choice for Filth is Techno. Paul has also been working with a indie band called 'The Heights' where he has been doing electronic remix's of their tracks, which you can also check out at the website.

Hyper helped to pioneer a style that has now become the dominant global club sound with the Y3K & Bedrock Breaks compilations a few years back, and has secured himself a place amongst the top musical players. His confidence is transparent in everything he does from the running of his label Kilowatt, his growing list of high-end remixes and his continuous touring. This year has brought more of the same, only bigger. Hypers last release Come With Me stormed the club charts on Timo Maass 420 label (his 3rd on that imprint so far) in May. Even bigger than that is the news that he has finished his debut artist album which is out now!! Expect a complete long player that weaves and bobs in new directions while keeping its feet firmly placed on the dance floor pulse of electronic music.

What's shakin'Jeremy!? Give me a brief background on yourself.
I've been producing music for about 3 years now and I've more or less tried my hand at pretty much every genre. Its only recently I've been getting properly into house and breaks and 'Let Me Out' was the first record I actually finished, so it was really great to have it signed! I don't DJ yet (learning), but I spend most of my time in my home studio (a 20k recording facility in my house!) which I intend to develop into a business next year.

Sounds dope. So what was the inspiration behind 'Let Me Out'?
Well it was a long time ago and it involved a cage....ah only joking. To be honest I can't really pin point any inspiration, I'm sure there was some but it was one of those tracks that happened really quickly and spontaneously.

I was wondering if there was a Pulp Fiction moment in your past, but I didn't wanna go there. What are you hoping to achieve out of your first vinyl release?
I hope to build up my reputation and get my name out there as a respected producer. I’m really keen to do more remix work and obviously sell loads of records!

No doubt. Are you hoping to launch your DJ career off the back of your productions?
If I DJ'd properly then yes... but I don't so I'd just embarrass myself if I tried! I just chill out in my studio and have a mix every now and then, maybe in the future if I get more time I'll give it a go!

I wouldn't worry. The guys with the band usually get more action anyway. So what projects have you got on the go now??
I’m working on lots of things at the moment. Obviously the house and breaks is a priority to follow up to ‘Let Me Out’. I had an electro influenced number on 'Fergies' radio 1 unsigned track of the week recently, which was cool and I'm also working on a new E.P for an up and coming label so watch out for that!

Hi Paul. So breakdown how you got involved with the producing side of music.
I came from a turntablist background and won numerous competitions playing hip hop over the years. I then got into breaks and house music and as time went on I got into Electro and Techno; through this I started producing in 2000. Since then I have concentrated on music production; making Techno, Tech House and Electro/Breaks just to be able to play out in my DJ sets.

What was the inspiration behind your 'Let Me Out' remix?
I did a few different versions of the remix. I did one that was Breakbeat with a bit of IDM Glitch. I sent that one in for the competiton but afterwards realised that 'Spin Out' didn't want a breakbeat remix and it needed to be Electro/Tech House! So when I scrapped the first attempt I decided I wanted to do a version with a really heavy bassline. I went back to the drawing board and came up with the 'Let me Jack' version.

What are you hoping to achieve out of your first vinyl release?
I couldn't believe it when I won the comp! I don't think it sank in until about 3 weeks later, then after that I didn't stop smiling for about 3 weeks! Actually! I'm still walking around with a smug grin on my face now!

I feel ya on that. So is a DJ career next?
Well Spin Out have been really good to me since they told me I won, I'm hoping to release more music through them or their new label called Uncut. They release good music and have a good reputation, so it would be a good move for me.

So what other projects are you cookin' up?
At the moment I'm working on some projects that hopefully Spin Out or Uncut will pick up on, more on the Tech House side of things. There is also an E.P. out at the end of July that will be released on Uncut. I have also been asked to do an exclusive track for a Compilation CD coming out around December on Lot49 mixed by Meat Katie, so I'm really excited about that. I'm also working on DJ sets incorporating my music in a live way.

Wicked man! Congrats on all your current and future success!

So Hyper, give me a recap of the first half of 2006 and how live project's been going?
The last year has been total chaos! Most time has been spent finishing off the ‘We Control’ album and licensing it out. We have signed it off to a number of different territories which has meant doing 10 times the amount of press I’m used to for say a mix album. I have also been spending time putting together the live show for the festivals this year. It’s been a fantastic experience which has taken us throughout Europe and beyond. The highlight so far has been Roskilde festival in Denmark and our Moscow show complete with stage divers!

Yeah, the band killed it at Ultra in Miami this Spring. So what was your direction with the remix of 'Let Me Out'?
What I wanted to do with that was take the original minimal vibe combined with the Technoid sounds and add our heavy rock slant to it. I’ve been really pleased with the way it’s been going down in my sets!

So what about this project appealed to you?
Kind of what I mentioned above but it was also the vocal. I liked it’s kind of rawness and rocky feel. When we did the mix we were originally going to put a massive effect over the vocal but eventually we decided that the charm and character of it was in the rawness and so left it totally dry in the end.

How has the crowd responded to the track when you have played it out?
The crowds have always responded well to the track. I first played it in San Francisco and it went off and it’s been in pretty much every set since. It was a big track on my recent tour to Australia for my Inthemix comp.

Fill me in on the other projects are you working on now?
We are currently about half way through the next artist album which is taking up a lot of time but is coming along really well! We have also done remixes for Spin Out, a label called Groenland and a stadium rock group from China called Yu Quan. I am constantly touring whether with the band or DJing solo, next stop is Japan and Korea for the Fuji Rock festival which I am really looking forward to. I am hoping to get another DJ mix comp out by the end of the year too

We'll be looking for it. Have a great Summer!
