Stefan Anion - DJ, Producer & Smooth Operator Doug Vaccaro gets to know one of the Lone Star state's top talents Stefan, originally from Germany, is one of Dallas’ premiere DJs and producers, writing and playing music for over eight years. From a young age people could see that this ordinary-looking person was nothing of the sort. Stefan took existing music and stretched it in new directions to develope sounds few would have expected. Over the years Stefan has had a hand in many of the EDM projects based in the South including the AI Collective, Dallas’ largest collective of up-and-coming producers which he formed with Brian Aneurysm, and The Mind Theory, one of Dallas’ first Progressive Breakbeat live acts. Stefan has produced remix work for The Cure, Tony Estrada and Gary Jules. His original music compositions have been featured on mix CDs and played for crowds in clubs around the world. ![]() Good evening Stefan How's the weather down in Texas? Wonderful, nice and hot, just right. Spent the day at the lake relaxing and getting away from everything. You are both a DJ and producer. Which one do you like more and why? Honestly I really love both. Both give me the escape I need. Lately I’ve been blending the two more and more by making my own edits and remixes / mashups in the studio. You are also the owner/operator of Blue Plasma Records. How is that going so far? Very well. We’re on the first release with our vinyl label and release five and six on the digital Side are due out any time now. We’re currently revamping things a bit, such as a new website etc. Tell us some of your musical influences. (Stretches hands out, scratches head) Ok, let’s see: I really would have to say my Mum and Dad plus growing up in Italy and Germany helped a bit. My Dad was a DJ at an Italian Disco and my Mum has always been into Electro and Synth Pop and even some Punk Rock. When I was a kid (sometime in the 80’s) she introduced me to some awesome music by Depeche Mode, Erasure, The Normal, The English Beat and even the Sex Pistols. As for more recent influences I would have to say: Plastikman, Aphex Twin, Claude Debussy, Dj Shadow, Hybrid and Radiohead to name a few. I've heard a few of your tracks and remixes thanks to internet radio, have any of them been properly released yet? My “Mad World” Remix appeared on Vinyl some time ago and it’s now available as an MP3 Download through Release Records. Play Recordings put out a remix of mine and Blake Potters last year. I’m still waiting for everything else to be released and honestly have no idea when it’s coming out. But, look out for some colabs with Jordan Daniel on BluePlasma as well as a few remixes here and there. You also host your own radio program on proton radio with Jordan Daniel. What should listeners expect when they tune into "Blue Industries”? Jordan and me acting strange, “interesting” music....sheer madness If you had a chance to collaborate in either the studio or behind the decks with someone (dead or alive), who would you pick? Dead: this would be more of a “go back in time” question, so I would go back to the 1920’s and record a lot of the Tin-Pan-Alley (beating on anything that stands, in rhythm) Music. Alive: Xavier Naido (German Songwriter) ![]() What can we expect to see from you in the near future? A lot more than just “progressive”. In my never ending search for the “right sound”, I’m branching out into more genres, if you will. Right now I’m partially going back to my roots (Techno, IDM) and I’m really into some of the more experimental stuff that’s been coming out. I¹m especially fond of this new “Electro Progressive” Genre. That’s like a mix of 80’s Electro, House, Progressive and a bit of Cheese thrown in for good measure. I’m also working on a sideproject with a Guitarist friend of mine, Calvin Chynoweth (Envoy), which should be done towards the end of the summer and has a more indie rock tone than anything I’ve ever done before. I suppose I’m getting away from purely synthesized music and more and more into organic sounding stuff. It’s really something I want to pursue to further expand my musical knowledge. I’d also like to eventually score Indie Films and TV Shows. I’m currently finishing up a few remixes for BluePlasma and The Carbon Community and later in the summer Jordan and I will begin working on a new CD for Proton Music. And God-willing, next year I’ll start working on an album. And now, some textbook questions on getting to know Stefan. I love these things... Favorite Color Blue Favorite Movie Fifth Element Lost in Translation Favorite Song 1. The Cure - Fascination Street 2. Kraftwerk - Kometenmelodie 3. Angleo Branduardi - Gato e Topolino 4. Eric Serra - Leeloominai 5. The English Beat - Mirror in the Bathroom Vinyl or CD Vinyl to collect if it’s cool (or a Pic-Disc), CD’s to play out.
